Vegetable Planting Time Frames

Cold weather plants should be planted in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Some plants to start in cold weather are:

Chives

Garlic

Leeks

Onions

Peas

Radicchio

Shallots

Cool weather plants are planted just before the last frost; they don’t like frost but will survive a mild hit. These plants generally don’t like hot weather.

Some plants to start in cool weather are:

Arugula

Broccoli

Cabbage

Chervil

Coriander

Kale

Lettuce

Parsley

Radishes

Spinach

Swiss Chard

Turnips

Warm weather plants won’t tolerate cold and should be planted after any threat of frost has passed. Most vegetables and annual herbs fall into this category.

Some plants to start in warm weather are:

Basil

Beans

Dill

Eggplant

Peppers

Sorrel

Tomatoes
