Answer
Helpful Hints for Vegetable Gardening
- Give ample space between plants
- If planting in rows, be sure to leave enough room between them
- Make sure there is plenty of room to walk between plants/rows for weeding and harvesting
- Plant new seedlings on an overcast day or in the late afternoon/early evening
- Eliminate as many weeds as possible, they only compete with your plants for water, nutrients, and sunlight
- Dispose of weeds away from your garden and not in the compost pile
- Use mulch to help reduce weeds and to keep moisture in the soil
- Do not use waste from cats, dogs, or humans; only herbivores like cows, horses, goats, chickens, and rabbits
- Do not use fresh manure, it will burn the plants
- Only use “well-rotted” manure – manure that has been allowed to sit and age for several months.
- Be sure to dispose of dead plant material at the end of the growing season. Debris from healthy plants can be added to the compost pile.
