Determinate vs. Indeterminate

What does it mean?

Determinate or bush tomato varieties are those that reach a certain plant height and then stop growing. Most of their fruit is produced over a four to six week period.

Indeterminate varieties continue to grow and flower throughout the season with an unlimited production potential, but have less mature fruits at any one time
.

Determinate Tomatoes
  • Vine ends in fruit
  • No new fruit after first fruit ripens
  • Smaller plants
  • Grows in smaller spaces
  • Doesn't always need staking
  • Produces early in season

Indeterminate Tomatoes

  • Keeps forming new vine
  • Keeps forming new fruit
  • Bigger Plants
  • Needs lots of space
  • Needs staking or caging
  • Produces later in season
