Clay Soil

Work 2-3 inches of organic matter (old mulch, peat moss, compost) into soil
Add at least 1 more inch of organic matter in the fall each year
Use permanent raised beds to improve drainage and to keep foot traffic off the growing area
Minimize tilling and spading
Never till or try to cultivate when the soil is wet

Sandy Soil

Work 3-4 inches of organic matter into soil
Mulch around plants to retain moisture and cool the soil
Add 2 inches of organic matter each year

Silty Soil

Add 1 inch of organic matter each year
Avoid compaction
Consider raised beds
