Answer

How to get rid of Japanese Beetles

  • High soil pH discourages grubs.

  • Make a bait of water, sugar, mashed fruit, and yeast. Place on the periphery of the garden in sunny spots at least 1 foot off the ground. Strain out beetles every morning.

  • Four o’clocks, larkspur, and geraniums all poison the beetles. Beware though, once you plant four o’clocks, they are difficult to get rid of.
  • Encourage starlings, the only bird that eats adult beetles.

  • Try trap crops of African marigolds, borage, evening primrose, soybeans, and white or pastel zinnias.

  • Plant rue around roses to deter beetles.
