Ways to Deter Deer
There are several different ways to keep these creatures from your beautiful flowers.
- Make a spray of 2 egg yolks in 1 quart of water, then spray foliage.
- Tie bags with 1 ounce of human or dog hair, dried blood meal, or fish heads to orchard trees or along the perimeter of melon and sweet potato patches. This provides protection for 10 months.
- Plant a border of plants that deer won’t eat.
- Hang soap – like Camay, Irish Spring or Safeguard– around area – but beware, groundhogs love soap
- Tying aluminum pie pans to poles so they bang together in the wind
Placing net bags of shaved soap or human hair around the garden
-
Spraying the ground around the garden with bobcat, lion, coyote, or fox urine
-
Installing motion detector activated sprinklers
-
Rigging spotlights to shine on the garden all night
-
Spraying a mixture of garlic, cayenne pepper, and canola oil on every leaf
-
Cotton cloths sprinkled with baby powder or athlete’s foot powder
-
Old shoes, dirty laundry, smelly socks or soiled diapers
-
Plants they do not like -- catnip, garlic, lavender, onions, spearmint, thyme, yarrow
Unfortunately if the deer are hungry enough nothing will deter them. So the only real solution is a barrier – a fence 10 feet or higher or an electric fence.
