Clematis Pruning Groups — Quick Guide

Group 1 – Minimal Pruning
Blooms in early spring on old wood.
Prune only after flowering, and only to remove dead or damaged stems.

Group 2 – Light Pruning
Blooms in late spring, often reblooms in summer.
In early spring, tidy lightly — remove dead stems and shape.
Don’t cut hard or you’ll lose spring flowers.

Group 3 – Hard Pruning
Blooms in summer to fall on new growth.
In early spring, cut back to 12–18 inches tall.
