About River Street Flowerland

2021 Season:  At River Street Flowerland we are determined to keep our staff and guests protected as best we can. We are disinfecting carts before and after each use for your safety; wiping down touch surfaces throughout the day; and offer a touchless credit card transaction.  We continue to practice social distancing and are dedicated to maintaining a safe and happy place to shop for all of our guests.  We request that you do wear a face mask for your safety and ours.  Thank you.

River Street Flowerland is an independent, family-owned garden center in Comstock Township, on the east side of Kalamazoo. The family venture into agriculture began with Richard Ouding and a celery farm on this land in the early 20th century. The farm and veggie stand transformed when Richard’s son, Robert (RC) took over the business and began growing flowers in 1960. The budding business grew and soon they built two small greenhouses. Shortly after, with the help of his wife, Stella, RC put together the original River Street Flowerland retail in 1978.

In 1985 Richard Ouding, RC’s eldest grandson, began his own horticultural pursuit and built his own greenhouses adjacent to his grandfathers.  Six years later, he purchased his grandparents’ business upon their retirement. And with the spring of 1992 came the first season of the second reincarnation of River Street Flowerland.

The latest retail space was remodeled and moved into in 2002, with additional perennial floor space and a redesigned tree and shrub area in 2014.  At present RSF features specialty plants from all over the world, including more than 100+varieties of herbs, nearly 1500 perennial varieties, over 200 varieties of succulents, a vast selection of specimen trees and shrubs along with a wide selection of pottery and garden décor.

River Street Flowerland takes pride in the quality of our products and our customer service.  We grow most everything right here, so we know it!   Stop by just to walk around, get inspired. Visit the different departments to find knowledgeable team members experienced with our wide variety of plants. We love gardening and plants as much as you do.  And we can all use some dirt and plant therapy!
