House Plant Key

Below you’ll find a list of many of the house plants that we’ve had the pleasure of growing at River St Flowerland. These plants are primarily propagated from our personal collection via cutting. This is a technique where a root, stem, or leaf is removed from a plant and placed in optimum conditions to allow that plant part, also called a propagule, to regenerate missing organs. The plants that grow from this propagule are identical, genetic copies of the parent plant, essentially a clone.

Semi-succulent, this plant is extremely tolerant of drought and susceptible to over watering. Prefers bright, indirect light. In the spring/summer growing season, weekly waterings should be ample & gives way to miniature little oak-like leaves growing from fresh nodes. Vigorously trailing and climbing this plant will travel some wild directions if left to its own devices, but relatively easy to train and sculpt. Do not be afraid to cut back, this should induce branching.

Originally this plant came to us labeled ‘Small Swiss Cheese’, and a crop the following month was labeled ‘friedrichsthalii’. Since then we’ve learned that is a variety of the classic monstera adansonii, commonly called ‘Narrow Form’. The largest leaves we’ve been able to grow are just over 12″, heavily perforated. In order to grow these large leaves the plant needs plenty of support, something to climb or crawl, rooting itself against. It can also make an attractive hanging plant though, the vines growing quickly & vigorously. Prefers bright, indirect light and a regular watering routine. We’ve found weekly to be ample indoors.

Philodendron hederaceum micans has iridescent, heart-shaped leaves that are velvety to the touch and almost quilted. Depending on the light and age of the leaf, its color can range from emerald to burgundy, with the new leaves emerging chartreuse, edged with pink. Colors will be most dramatic in bright light; though adaptable to lower light conditions keep in mind this might exaggerate internode length (it will stretch). Weekly watering have been ample for us indoors. Generally vining, this plant is an aroid and can be trained to climb most trellis, great for plant-sculpting experiments.

Pothos ‘Neon’ is a popular, easy-to-care-for plant that has become a favorite among indoor gardeners. This fast-growing plant produces electric neon green leaves that instantly adds a splash of color to any room. It’s typically grown as a hanging plant but can also be attached to a totem for an impressive climbing plant. This plant will adapt to most light conditions, just remember to adjust your watering accordingly. If given plenty of water and not enough light the vines could start to stretch, or even worse get root-rot. We’ve found weekly waterings to be ample indoors.

Originally from the tropical rainforests of Brazil, this plant quickly gained traction in houseplant culture due to its ease of care, resilience, and color. Variegated green, yellow and cream. each of this plants’ vines is an unpredictable cascade of color. Vines can be growing trailing or taught to climb. Adaptable to most light conditions, jut remember to adjust your watering accordingly. We’ve found in bright, indirect light, weekly waterings are ample indoors, however in lower light conditions you may be able to wait even longer between.
